Why Does the Western Public Desire Pilates?

As a Yoga teacher, and a pilates instructor, it is very noticeable that pilates and Yoga reach two distinctly different groups of people. The typical pilates student does not want to learn about meditation, Pranayama, Sanskrit, bandhas, mudras, or doshas. In the mind of a pilates enthusiast, all of these Yogic aspects are considered secondary to the physical workout.

In a pilates mat class, the emphasis is on precise movement, to gain maximum benefits and results, for physical appearance. Although Yoga and pilates are often categorized as mind and body exercise, Pilates focus is much more about the physical body than Hatha Yogas holistic approach to overall health.

Hatha Yoga, which is union through physical mastery, is a complete health maintenance system for mind, body, and spirit. pilates is an off shoot of Hatha Yoga, but it is a unique, complex, and extremely complete exercise system.

Therefore, most forms of Hatha Yoga are not simply exercise classes. A complete health maintenance system, such as Hatha Yoga, took thousands of years to develop and evolve. The pilates method is close to a century old, but it has already started to evolve in its own different directions.

So, which is better Yoga or Pilates? Neither - The truth is, the student makes an individual choice, based upon his or her specific needs. Many Yoga students enjoy the holistic approach, which Yoga takes toward health, but for some students, japa (repetition of mantras), or meditation, may feel very uncomfortable.

Lets look at this situation closely. Some people feel uncomfortable because japa is commonly practiced in Sanskrit, and they do not comprehend the words.

Swami Sivananda said, Repetition of any Mantra or Name of the Lord is known as Japa. Japa is an important Anga of Yoga. It is a spiritual food for the hungry soul.

Japa is a spiritual aspect of Hatha Yoga. Japa is commonly practiced in Bhakti Yoga, which is deeply spiritual and the most popular form of Yoga in india.

Some Yoga students would rather not sing, chant, or pray out loud. Some people do not trust anything or anyone who is spiritual. Unfortunately, there have been a number of holy men who have violated the publics trust.

In the United States, anything spiritual has become politically incorrect. There is a movement to take, In God we Trust off US currency. The irony of this is, a few loud voices have caused the public to be hesitant about anything that could be considered remotely religious.

Dont Ever be discouraged (A wasted and damaging emotion), do what you can. If some emergency happens in your life and you miss a few days or any amount of time JUST jump back in. Exercising your body compared to not Exercising your body is always the positive choice. There are also floor exercises you can do to work on each of these muscle groups.

A guide I put together years ago.

For a close to complete body workout, knock off these weight exercises daily or every other day. A pair of dumbbells is all that is needed for most exercises. If you dont have dumbbells use pressure against a wall or doorway, etc. Of course use no equipment and knock off lots of push ups and sit ups. I think a short workout with weights is a good start before knocking off quality push ups, plus you can be in any shape to do the following weight routine. OF course, IF YOU havent been exercising start any weight lifting at the number of repetitions thats good for you. Unless you are young and can push yourself without getting hurt, do the number of repetitions that is good for you, even if that is ONE lift of each type exercise. You will be in shape in no time, but you have to start sometime.

Its amazing how fast the body can get into good shape if you stick with it. Im talking a few weeks. You may not be at the exact body shape or strength goals you set, but I Guarantee you will feel completely different. If you dont it means you havent advanced to the weight level or number of repetitions that your body is craving.

If you can combine this with Yoga (good flexibility will make you feel great and is a treat for your body) and aerobic activity, i.e. biking, swimming, fast walking, aerobics class, running, baseball, softball, tennis, volleyball, rowing, hiking, etc. or most any fun aerobic game or exercise then you are off to a great health Start.

I GAURANTEE you will feel great, but I think you already know this. MAKE THE TIME, even if it is isometrics at your office desk or walking around the block. You do this enough and I guarantee you will crave to go further.

Throw in some good eating (maybe juicing greens and an apple) and everything in your life will be THE BEST including keeping everything in perspective, this includes handling challenges that come your way.

IMPORTANT: For maximum benefit and less likely hood of injury Stretch before and after each exercise, especially the area used in the exercise.

If you have time see how many pushups or sit ups you can knock off in 2 minutes. (2 minutes of pushups and 2 minutes of sit ups).

A note: if your body is shaped for most strength on top, great concerning push ups. If your body is not shaped that way dont be discouraged with the push ups. move on to the sit ups, you may be pleasantly surprised.

VERY NOTEWORTHY:

If you have gotten even a little out of shape and are trying to slim down be aware of the following. When you start to loose weight you may notice parts of your body (i.e.your abdomen or other parts) seem even more pronounced. DO NOT BE DISCOURAGED. When you start to tone your body (after even a small amount of weight gain) your abdomen, for example may seem more pronounced but it will be temporary and is only because your muscles may be getting more toned and slimmer and any extra weight (even the slightest) may be pronounced until your whole system is slimmed down. DO not BE DISCOURAGED and also note you may be getting healthier and in shape but your scale may show otherwise becuse of more dense muscle. This is were many people trying to loose weight get discouraged. Do not BE, get past that initial body re-alignment and the rewards will be priceless. Remember health is Wealth.

Personally I never use a scale. I go by how my clothes fit, concerning any weight change.

I have been in the peak of shape and I have not used a scale, unless I am at the Dr.s, since I turned 18.

Santa is Always the News

We all know Santas story by now. He was originally a bishop back in the day, and after he died he became known as saint Nicholas, or saint Nick for short. And even way back then, before Christmas became a major holiday, the anniversary of his death was a day to celebrate by giving out gifts. But most of us dont know that saint Nick actually had a bad rap for a while, and that is actually how he got all of the other names we know him by today.

During the time of great change in the Christian Church known as the Protestant Reformation, which occurred in the 1500s, the famous Martin Luther declared that all good Christians should stop celebrating saints. For the devout followers of Luther, that meant also stopping the celebration of saint Nick, no matter how fun the gift giving had become.

But of course, not all Christians stopped celebrating saint Nick, not even all of the Protestants. Instead of stopping the celebration, they crafted a plan to enjoy the saint Nick holiday in secret. This is when saint Nick became known in England as Father Christmas. In Germany, people referred to Santa as Christmas Man, and the Dutch created the name Sinterklass.

About this time, a large majority of Dutch settlers moved to New Amsterdam in Americawhat would later become New Yorkand brought their celebration of Sinterklass with him. Americans caught on to the idea, and tried to pronounce his name right. But instead, what came out was Santa Claus.

However, Santa Claus did not hit the big time until the author of Sleepy Hollow, Washington Irving, got wind of Santa Claus and promoted him the American press. This happened in the early 1800s, when Washington Irving wrote a story called the A History of New York, in which he went into great detail about a man called Sinterklass. This saint Nick was fat and short, wore a funny costume, and would travel around on the Eve of saint Nicolas on a horse.

The idea of jolly gift-giving man caught on in the American press. Another writer, the poet Clement Clark Moore, wrote a poem called A Visit from St. Nicolas, which is better known as, The Night Before Christmas. It was Moore who made saint Nick a jolly old elf who flies around the night in a magical sleigh powered by eight flying reindeer. We all know the names of those reindeer, right? Well, Moore also included them in his poem.

Americans would get their best images of Santa Claus in the magazines of the late 1800s, when the cartoonist Thomas Nast put out his own visions of saint Nick in Harpers Weekly. For Nast, Santa was a bigger man with a big fat belly, who wore a red suit lined with fur and a big leather belt. Nast also started drawing images of Santas workshop in the North Pole, and Santa using a list to keep track of his kids who were naughty and nice.

Of course, these are all the images of Santa that we use today in the newspapers, in cartoons, and on TV. Or should we say, perhaps, images of Sinterklass?
